Book Review: “Sex, Lies, & Religion” by Randy Elrod

Curiosity led me to read “Sex, Lies, & Religion” by Randy Elrod. Period.

At first, I thought this book is another work to expose another scandal plaguing an organized religion but reading the book, chapter by chapter, brought me in an inner journey that made me appreciate more my vocation as a religious, professing to live a celibate and chaste life, alongside with being poor and obedient. My religious profession will not make me higher in status with the married couples or those who remain single forever; I believe all people are equal in dignity no matter what kind of vocation one pursues and all of us are called to be holy. This book challenges me too to know more about my own Catholic faith and the teachings of the Church on certain moral issues.

Elrod, in this book, recounted how some religions suppress the true meaning of sex, sexuality, and everything related to it – that hinder its followers to attain the fullness of life and the joy of living. He also gave some important points that will surely challenge its readers to take a whole new paradigm shift about one’s view of sex and sexuality.

In a world that seeks to portray people as a commodity, oftentimes at the expense of women, “Sex, Lies, & Religion” comes to remind us of our human dignity rooted in the graciousness of God towards us. In our present day where sex is being rendered as cheap and voyeurism is the name of the game, Randy Elrod emphasized the power of sex to reflect God’s communion with us especially through the fidelity between a husband and wife and that in the context of marriage, the bedroom is sacred.

What I like the most in this book is Elrod’s discourse on “something” which is more fulfilling than a great sex – and that is our intimacy with God, which can fill the void in our life and fulfill our innermost longings and desires. I pray that I may live my life only for Jesus. I believe this is what the saints, especially the mystics, discovered in their relationship with the Lord.  Now I know why their moments of deep connection with God is called “rupture” and “ecstasy.” Find out why in Randy Elrod’s “Sex, Lies, & Religion.”
